How I navigate the workplace as a Highly Neurotic Person

It takes so much bother to look this unbothered

People always comment on how clean and uncluttered my workspace is. They think I’m super organized or love minimalism. The truth? I’m a bit neurotic, and things out of place mess with my head.

I sometimes wonder how long it will take them to figure out the real reason. My desk isn’t tidy because I want it to look nice; it has to be this way. If a pen is out of place or there’s a stray paperclip, my mind goes nuts. Everything has a spot, and I need it to stay there.

People think it’s impressive. They want their desks to look like mine, but they don’t get the effort it takes. For me, it’s not just about being neat; it’s about staying sane. An organized desk means an organized mind, or at least that’s what I tell myself while I line up my pens just right.

It’s not just tidiness; it’s control. A misplaced stapler isn’t just annoying; it throws me off completely. My workspace is my safe zone where I can manage the chaos of life.

That said, I decided to share some of the ways you can manage your neuroticism in the workplace. It can be a challenge, but with the right strategies, you can turn this tendency into a strength rather than a hindrance.

Here are three effective ways to handle neuroticism and maintain a productive, healthy work environment:

1. Create a Structured Environment

Structure is a neurotic person’s best friend. Having a clear, organized workspace can significantly reduce anxiety and improve focus. Start by decluttering your desk and keeping only essential items within reach. Use organizers, labels, and a consistent filing system to keep everything in its place. Develop a routine that includes regular breaks and dedicated times for specific tasks. This predictability can help soothe your mind and keep stress at bay.

2. Practice Mindfulness and Stress-Reduction Techniques

I commit “neurotically” to my daily yoga practice. The first thing I do when I get out of bed is get on my mat where I spend 30mins with Yoga with Adrienne to begin my day. It settles my mind, calms my nervous system and gets my juices flowing for the day. It’s a wining formula!

Incorporating mindfulness practices into your daily routine can help manage the anxiety that often accompanies neuroticism. Techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or even a few minutes of quiet reflection can make a big difference. Set aside time each day to practice these techniques, either at the beginning of your workday or during breaks. Additionally, physical activities like yoga or a short walk can help reduce stress levels and improve your overall well-being.

3. Set Realistic Goals and Expectations

Neurotic individuals often strive for perfection, which can lead to unnecessary stress and frustration. To counter this, set realistic, achievable goals. Break larger projects into smaller, manageable tasks and focus on completing them one step at a time. Celebrate your achievements, no matter how small, to build confidence and reduce the pressure of trying to do everything perfectly. Remember, progress is more important than perfection.

By creating a structured environment, practicing mindfulness, and setting realistic goals, you can effectively manage neuroticism in the workplace. These strategies not only help reduce anxiety but also turn your attention to productive habits, allowing you to thrive in your professional life.
